Vote for Our Kitchen!

We are stuck at a crossroads in our kitchen design. Which one do you like better?
*Edit - Option one is on the left, option two on the right. You can click the pictures to view actual size.

Note that in option two, we would be walling off the hallway that connects the kitchen and the bathroom. This means the only access to the bathroom would be from the hall off the living room. Option two also means that we'll have a larger bathroom (big enough for a double vanity) once we renovate the bathroom. I'm also hoping for a window bench in this design.

Option one keeps the basic layout the same as it is currently, but updates the cabinets and adds a few more. We keep the peninsula and add bar stools.

In both designs we will have a corner bench and two chairs around the dining table.

We have decided on white cabinets to keep the space bright, and I think we are leading toward the beadboard style. We did real work on the house this weekend - I swear! It just got too dark before we took pictures of anything.

I'm going to try to stay on top of updating this more frequently in the coming weeks as we make a decision on the kitchen and move forward.

Comment with your thoughts! Is it weird to loose the walk-through to the bathroom from the kitchen? I'm worried about guests/outdoor parties and walking through the living room... Does the peninsula cut off the room and make it look smaller? Are the beadboard cabinets going to go out of style quicker than other more classic designs?

hey! its mel :) just one comment, the oven to the left, where it doesnt have counter space on both sides of it... that is one thing you will need... just for plates, and bowls, and utensils and spices when cooking. so it might be something to think about :) but the layouts are great! dont forget about the kitchen triangle :) we went through about 8-10 designs before we got the right layout

Lori,

I like option 2. I like the little breakfast bar and I like that there's counter space on both sides of the oven..... Option 1 looks a little closed in. If option 2 gets you a bigger bathroom, too, I'd say go for it....

Nix taking photos of the renovations, I like the nature shots :)

Hey Guys,
Rickie says he likes option two because it gives the house more of an open space, plus with the window there, it gives the room more light. The only problem is that the bathroom is going to only have one entrance.
I would worry about the one access to the bathroom as well. Option two would be better for moving around the kitchen for entertaining, but having to run through the livingroom to use the bathroom could get messy. Is there a chance that you could eventually put a half bath downstairs someday? That could take care of the muddy feet issue.
So many options, so little time (or probably more like money ha.)
Good luck with your decision.
You will have to teach me how to add things to the blog. I am impressed.
Love you,
A. Deb and Rickie Rick

Yeah I think we all agree! 2nd option it is ... figure out the bathroom issue later (1/2 bath downstairs like you talked about). I think you'll be so happy with the larger kitchen and better entertaining space that the bathroom thing won't be that big of an "issue". Get a durable hall runner for people going through the house. They make some cool things these days made out of weird materials that can get wet and dirty and not show it — and can be mopped! I'll have to try to find a link for you.
Or just make everyone take off their shoes and provide a basket of slippers! haha So "zen".

Oh - and regarding the cabinets ... I'm not super crazy about the wood with the grooves in it. Do they have something even more basic without grooves? You could also combine a couple diff cabinet door styles ... I think they often do that in Ikea kitchens, no? I think that could look nice.

count me as another vote for option 2.. it really opens up the kitchen, and gives you a lot more counter space to work with. the bigger vanity space in the bathroom is another bonus, and I agree that you can figure out a bathroom access solution down the road. good luck!!
